Shipping Containers for Sale in Melbourne

We sell new, used, second hand and refurbished shipping containers from 6ft to 45ft, including high cubes, delivered across Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate from our Tottenham yard. Typical delivery is 3 to 5 days from order.

Container sizes we stock

We stock 6ft, 8ft and 10ft containers for tight sites, 20ft and 40ft in standard height, and 20ft, 40ft and 45ft high cubes where extra headroom matters. The dimensions table below gives the external and internal measurements for each.

6ft

Around 3 square metres. Fits in a driveway or small yard. Good for garden equipment, tools and household overflow.

8ft

Around 4 square metres. Still compact enough for tight sites, with useful extra depth over the 6ft.

10ft

Around 6 square metres. A common choice for trade storage and small site offices.

20ft high cube

Around 15 square metres with extra headroom. The most popular size for general storage and modifications.

40ft

Around 30 square metres. For bulk storage, plant and machinery, or a full household.

Shipping container dimensions in metres, length × width × height. External measurements are what you need for working out site access and where the container will sit. Internal measurements are what you actually get to use.

These are nominal figures and vary slightly between manufacturers. The 6ft and 8ft sizes are not ISO standard — they are cut down from larger units, so their dimensions vary more than the rest. If a measurement is critical to your job, ask us and we will measure the actual container before it goes on the truck.

New, used or refurbished?

New (one-trip)

A container that has made a single voyage from the factory. Clean, no dents, doors and seals in as-new condition. The choice when appearance matters, when the container is going to be modified, or when it will sit somewhere visible.

Refurbished

A used container that has been repaired, treated and repainted. Sound and watertight, presents well, and costs less than new. The middle option when a container needs to look respectable without being perfect.

Used

An ex-shipping container in working condition, also sold as a second hand container. Surface rust, dents and faded paint are normal at this grade. What matters is that it is wind and watertight with a sound floor and doors that work, and every used container we sell is checked for exactly that before it leaves the yard. The most economical option where looks do not matter.

Buying a used or second hand container

Used containers are graded, and the grade tells you more than the photographs do.

Wind and watertight. The usual grade for storage. The container keeps the weather out — no holes, sound roof, door seals that still seal. Expect surface rust, dents and patchy paint. Most second hand containers sold for storage are this grade.

Cargo worthy. Certified fit to carry freight again, which is a higher standard than wind and watertight. You need it if the container will be shipped or railed while loaded. It costs more, and it is not necessary for a container that will sit in one spot.

As is. Sold in the condition it arrived in, sometimes with known faults. Cheapest, and only sensible if you have looked at it yourself or you are modifying it anyway.

What to check on a second hand container

The floor. Marine ply, and it should feel solid underfoot with no soft patches or heavy oil staining.
The doors and seals. Doors that bind, or perished seals, are the most common fault and the most irritating to live with.
The roof. Pooled water and rust spots up top are the usual source of leaks.
The corner castings. Damaged castings make a container harder and dearer to lift and move later.

Every used container we sell is checked on all four counts before it leaves Tottenham. You are also welcome to come and look at it in the yard before you commit.

Delivery and site access

Containers are delivered by tilt tray from our Tottenham yard. A tilt tray needs clear straight-line access of roughly twice the length of the container, plus room to bring the truck in and out. Watch for overhead power lines, low branches, narrow gates and soft ground.

Where access is tight, a side loader or crane can place a container into spots a tilt tray cannot reach. The ground should be reasonably level and firm – a container carries its weight on its four corner castings, so uneven ground can twist the frame and make the doors hard to open. Timber chocks can be supplied on request.
