Shipping Container Transport Across Melbourne and Victoria

Moving a shipping container is not the same as moving freight. A 20ft container weighs around two tonnes empty and a 40ft high cube closer to four, and it has to be set down square, level and exactly where you want it — usually in a yard, driveway or paddock that was never designed for a truck that size.

Commercial Containers Australia has moved more than 14,000 containers. Our transport is carried out by our sister company, Commercial Towing Australia, on our own fully insured and maintained fleet. The same team handles your container from our yard to your site, so there is no third-party carrier in the middle and no one to point the finger at if something is not right.

We move containers we have sold or hired to you, and we move containers you already own — site relocations, depot pick-ups and interstate runs.

Tilt Tray, Side Loader or Crane

Three ways to put a container on the ground. Which one we send depends on your site, not on what happens to be free that day.

Tilt Tray

The most common method and the most economical for a single container. The tray tilts back and the container is winched off, sliding into place as the truck pulls forward. It needs a clear run-up of roughly twice the container length and reasonably firm, level ground.

Side Loader

A self-loading trailer that lifts the container off its own deck with two hydraulic cranes and sets it down beside the truck. Ideal for tight sites and narrow driveways where there is no room for a run-up, and the only practical option when a container has to go down beside a fence or between two buildings.

Crane and Hiab

For containers that need to be lifted over an obstacle, stacked two high, or placed onto footings, piers or a slab. We arrange the lift and the traffic management where the job calls for it.

Getting Your Site Ready

Most delivery problems are site problems, and nearly all of them can be sorted out beforehand. Before the truck arrives, check:

Access width. A truck and trailer needs a clear run in and a way back out. Gateposts, letterboxes and low branches are the usual culprits.
Overhead clearance. Power lines, verandah roofs and tree limbs over the drop point.
Ground. Firm enough to take the truck without bogging, and level enough that the container sits square. Soft ground after rain is the most common reason a delivery has to be rebooked.
Someone on site. Not essential, but it saves a phone call if the driver has a question about where it goes.

Our administration staff and drivers will happily assist and guide you if you have any concerns about level ground suitability. Timber chocks can be made available prior to delivery on request, and guidance for levelling your container can also be provided at the point of delivery. There is more in our FAQ.
